The "yard-sign-brand" traditional alarm panel I use in my home has a ridiculous achilles heel I found by accident, which renders the system completely inert. The systems need to be tested frequently, and the radio/cellular systems are tested multiple times a day automatically, instead of never for phone systems.Ĭomcast hardly has the only alarm system with critical flaws. I can't even count the number of times I've seen the phone line just flat out disconnected with nobody having any knowledge. Also, while I don't touch phones or alarms in my line of work, I do frequently see situations where the phone service provider pulls the connection on the line going to the security box (typically has no idea what it does/why its there), and never puts it back while testing and diagnosing other issues. When you have phone service on the alarms, they generally do not check in to report system is functioning properly. Cellular/wireless is much more reliable for me. Its the same price as a phone line (which I wouldn't use for anything else anyways) and my service here is temperamental. In addition to the other comments about the cost and difficulty of wiring the house, I use cellular service for my alarm. Wireless everything is a double edged sword.ĮDIT:PS-I have Comcast cable and get their home security ads regularly and can not imagine a future would I would even consider it. If I have a floored attic or an acceessible crawl space it would be nice to have to option to pay for it (as opposed to DIY). It's way easier and cheaper to slap up a couple sensors and move on to the next account.
Not because of cost or time but just because they stopped training how to do it. I moved to in my current house and was told they dont wire anymore, period. No batteries to worry about and no little boxes on the doors with double stick tape. it should be a no-brainer that you dont want to sacrifice all those benefits just so you can easily and cheaply connect your networked devices.īecause retrofitting wiring into a home ranges from moderately difficult to "impossible without ripping out thousands of dollars worth of walls and floors and then putting it all back together" home owners need to spend the money to have more wired ports in their home to have better quality connections, faster internet, and above all MORE SECURE networking. if its sits in one place, for longer then 1 hour, it should be wired.
